The Beckman Oral Motor Assessment and Intervention were developed by Debra Beckman, MS, CCC-SLP, a practicing speech-language pathologist since 1975. Ms. Beckman developed these therapeutic tools to assist people who may or may not be able to follow instructions related to oral-motor movements. Her strategies facilitate the sensory motor loop necessary for oral movement and build skills toward specific muscle contraction. As strength of the oral musculature builds, muscle movements become “internal to the muscle”.
Beckman Oral Motor Intervention can be used to facilitate both speech production and feeding skills. Issues such as tooth grinding, drooling and hyper/hyposensitivity may also be addressed by the Beckman protocol. Techniques that are used are presented in a playful, gentle manner, so that all children feel respected. Emphasis is placed on providing parent training so that the techniques can be carried over into the home for maximum benefit.
